I carved these skulls for my nephew’s first birthday. Convenient that it was a pirate-theme birthday party. This is my first creative food carving piece and I think they came out very scary.

ANZAC Day @ NYC

A few weekends ago I found myself back in with the Aussies. The Aussies of Manhattan anyway. April 25th was Anzac Day (Wikipedia) a commemoration of the members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps who fought at Gallipoli. There’s a Mel Gibson flick about it which is worth watching.

While drinking with comrades, we played two-up, and it was probably the only day of the year where so much unregulated gambling would be permitted at a bar in NY. The premise is simple, bet against those around you whether the spinner will toss two coins from the kip. Players bet whether they will both show heads or tails, a 50/50 warrants a re-toss.

When the night was done we stayed at Nadine’s cousin’s apartment on the upper east side. The view was spectacular and overlooked the park, maybe I could live in NYC someday.

Internet & E-commerce Law

During my studies at Bond University I was a legal research assistant at the Department of Law. I had the pleasure of working with the other research assistants and contributing to a law textbook. I assisted with the Privacy and Spam Law chapters along with some draft review.

Internet and E-commerce Law is published by the Oxford University press and is available for order online. I was surprised last week when a copy from Australia arrived for me!

Congratulations to both Jay Forder and Dan Svantesson on their recent publication, and to all of the others who worked behind the scenes to make it happen.

Orchestra Lunch

The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony played for CIGI/IGLOO over the lunch hour this friday. Beethoven, Bach and others were on the set list, spiced with an excellent flute solo for good measure. It was a pleasure to hear classical music resonate through the office. If only more employers could bring the symphony in to play for their employees!

Hosted in the Seagram’s Building the aire was something special. The building used to be a brewery for Seagram’s from 1857 until 1992. It’s got quite a history, you can read more at the City of Waterloo’s Seagram Collection website.

I’m feeling pretty cultured lately as this is the first of two symphonic experience I’ll be privy to this week. Later this evening, Massey Hall will be hosting Video Games Live a mixed media experience. I’ve been anticipating the event as I enjoy music and video games together.

Check out either of the symphony experiences and you won’t be disappointed.

It Still Snows in Canada

Some Australian Travel Agents don’t think that it can snow in Toronto because it is down “too low”. Well, this wasn’t quite taken in Toronto, but we’re actually a bit little lower. All the best from my Igloo up in Canada!

Update - Jan 25: Australia issues Canadian travel warning. As if being ‘too low for snow’ wasn’t enough to detour people from visiting Canada. Travel agents can now rely on the new warning to shy you away from Canada and into more ~~exotic~~ expensive vacations. Maybe terrorism, rabies, earthquakes, ice storms, the 401, bad drivers, bad truckers, auto theft, tornadoes and lack of gun control will do the trick?

Don’t believe the hype, Canada is a great place to visit!

Finishing a puzzle in a small apartment with an over-active kitten is no easy task. I am proud to announce that Nadine and I managed to piece this together after 3 weeks of casual puzzling and only a few Chatty related re-constructions.

Chatty likes to play, we like to play, sometimes people and cat play don’t work well together. We devised a number of strategies to protect our work from her late-night mischief. The best seemed to be placing a rug over the puzzle with a folding chair on top, out of sight out of mind.
